Navigating the Global Energy Shock: Impact on Bangladesh and Way Forward

The Bangladesh Sustainable and Renewable Energy Association (BSREA) in collaboration with the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI)  and Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL), successfully organized a roundtable discussion titled “Navigating the Global Energy Shock: Impact on Bangladesh and Way Forward” on Thursday, 09 April 2026, at the DCCI Auditorium, Motijheel, Dhaka.

The roundtable was convened at a critical time when Bangladesh is grappling with a fragile macroeconomic environment, compounded by global energy market volatility and supply chain disruptions, particularly in key transit routes such as the Strait of Hormuz. These external shocks have significantly increased fuel import costs, intensified energy shortages, and placed considerable strain on industrial productivity, foreign exchange reserves, and overall economic stability.

Bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, energy experts, and private sector representatives, the discussion provided a platform to critically assess the multidimensional impacts of the ongoing global energy crisis on Bangladesh. Participants highlighted the “double squeeze” of rising energy prices and constrained supply, which is forcing difficult policy choices between increased subsidies and inflationary pressures.

The session focused on identifying immediate response strategies to mitigate the current crisis, while also exploring long-term solutions for strengthening energy security. Key recommendations included reducing dependency on imported fossil fuels, accelerating renewable energy adoption, enhancing energy efficiency, and fostering greater public-private collaboration in the energy sector.

Distinguished discussants shared valuable insights and practical perspectives on navigating the evolving global energy landscape. The dialogue emphasized the urgent need for strategic policy interventions and investment in sustainable energy solutions to ensure resilience and long-term economic stability.

The roundtable concluded with a strong call for coordinated action among stakeholders to transform current challenges into opportunities, paving the way for a more secure, diversified, and sustainable energy future for Bangladesh.
