A sustainable and long-term solution to Bangladesh’s ongoing energy challenges lies in scaling up domestic solar power, according to experts at a recent press briefing held on 4 May at the National Press Club.
The briefing was jointly organized by the Bangladesh Sustainable and Renewable Energy Association (BSREA), ActionAid Bangladesh, and JETnet-BD, bringing together civil society representatives, energy experts, and stakeholders to discuss Bangladesh’s renewable energy future.
10,000 MW Solar Target: A Realistic Path Forward
Speakers welcomed the government’s target of generating 10,000 MW of solar power by 2030, describing it as both timely and achievable. However, they emphasized that meeting this target will require a transparent, inclusive, and sustainable implementation roadmap supported by strong policy alignment and financial commitment.
Key Recommendations for Advancing Energy Sovereignty
During the discussion, experts outlined several strategic recommendations to accelerate Bangladesh’s transition toward renewable energy:
Integrated Solar Expansion
A comprehensive approach is needed to rapidly scale up solar deployment across multiple segments, including off-grid and community-based systems, rooftop solar, solar irrigation, as well as innovative solutions such as agro-voltaics and floating solar projects.
Reducing Dependence on Imported Fuels
Bangladesh currently spends significant foreign exchange on LNG and coal imports. Expanding domestic renewable energy has the potential to save billions of dollars while enhancing energy security and resilience.
Ensuring a Just Energy Transition
A people-centered approach is critical. Experts stressed the importance of including marginalized communities and women in the energy transition process to ensure equity and shared benefits.
Policy Reform and Investment Support
To unlock the full potential of renewable energy, it is essential to address existing barriers such as high import duties, policy constraints, and financing gaps. Creating an enabling environment will attract investment and accelerate clean energy adoption.
Strengthening Bangladesh’s Energy Future
The discussions highlighted that reducing reliance on imported fuels and prioritizing domestic renewable resources—particularly solar energy—can play a transformative role in strengthening Bangladesh’s economic stability and energy independence.
As BSREA, we remain committed to advancing sustainable energy solutions, policy advocacy, and stakeholder collaboration to support Bangladesh’s journey toward a cleaner, more resilient, and inclusive energy future.
