To ensure energy security and long-term sustainability in the power sector, the expansion of renewable energy has become a necessity, according to the Bangladesh Solar and Renewable Energy Association (BSREA). The organization has presented several recommendations and proposals to the government in this regard.
These suggestions were shared during a press conference held on Saturday (July 5) at the Dhaka Reporters Unity.
Speakers at the event said that as the country’s natural gas reserves are gradually depleting, the energy sector is becoming increasingly import-dependent, putting pressure on foreign exchange reserves. Therefore, expanding renewable energy is now a timely and essential step.
They stated, “We want a stable, investment-friendly environment where both international and local investors feel confident, and where the country’s renewable energy sector can develop into a reliable destination for future investments.”
BSREA’s Key Recommendations:
- The government has already invited tenders for 55 new solar power projects, which is a positive move. However, the participation of foreign investors in these projects is still below expectations. Some projects have received only a single bidder, while others have received none. The earlier cancellation of 37 solar power projects has created a sense of distrust among investors. Those cancelled projects had already seen investments of around USD 300 million. Therefore, BSREA urges the government to reconsider and review the cancelled projects.
- Ensure tax benefits for OPEX-based investments to enable power producers to expand renewable energy affordably and effectively over the long term.
- High tariffs on solar equipment must be reduced to form a unified and supportive duty structure.
- The net metering process must be made more transparent, simplified, and investor-friendly.
- Existing import duties on lithium-ion battery cells should be reduced.
- In line with the High Court’s directive, a dedicated cell under the Ministry of Power should be formed to ensure solar panels are installed on all rooftops across the country.
Attendees at the Press Conference:
Among others, the event was attended by BSREA General Secretary Engr. Ataur Rahman Sarkar Rozel, Senior Vice President Zahidul Alam, Abu Taher, Sheikh Mohammad Ruhul Amin, and Finance Director Nitai Pada Saha.
